here yes, but not there
The work in this gallery was created over a period of two months in fall 2024 in 37PK's host studio, Doc4 in Haarlem, NL. It was then exhibited in 'Here yes, but not there' at 37PK in Haarlem (NL). The nine individual sculptures and one group of cardboard/leather sketches, were all part of one conversation or improvisation, often commenting on itself. Set out to document an interaction with the materials it became a means to solidify or contain a movement/moment in time.
For the pieces I utilized pre-used discarded cardboard, wood and leather, gathered from friend's homes, local stores, streets and the studio itself. Although I had particular outlines in mind, chance was an important factor in my work, making the character of the available materials consequential.
In this particular group balance and tension were important, but the focus was on demarkation, the taking up of space, claiming territory with lines and fields. Another thought I was working with was of a surface as a façade, a way to conceal and indicate front or back, outside or inside. Surface can also indicate content. The materials were flat when I received them, but had had volume in the past and contained something. In this exhibit they again were containing.
As with the previous site specific projects, the work was made to only exist in this exhibit and to be taken apart and recycled again, after.
